In a country plagued by ever-changing, inclement weather, sudden typhoons, and flash floods, a proper four-wheel-drive SUV with plenty of ground clearance is the ideal companion. This is especially true when you’re feeling adventurous and want to explore new roads—even if bad weather seems to be constantly tailing you.
Pair that ruggedness with an electrified powertrain mated to an efficient internal combustion engine, offering a claimed 975-kilometer range, and you have the ultimate adventure machine built to chase real thrills.
So what makes the Denza B5 so capable in the hands of thrill-seekers? It starts with that range-extender hybrid setup. Combined, the B5 throws down a staggering 570 horsepower and 738 Nm of torque.
Its body-on-frame architecture provides a rock-solid foundation, with the group’s signature Blade LFP batteries integrated neatly between the frame rails. This layout lowers the center of gravity and aids stability, vastly improving handling both on and off the tarmac.
That muscle is sent to all four wheels through what Denza calls a virtual four-wheel-drive system. With dedicated electric motors on each axle, the vehicle dynamically distributes maximum torque precisely where traction dictates.
The rear axle features a dedicated reduction gear for low-range crawling, backed by traditional mechanical locking differentials at both ends.
Whether the B5 lifts a wheel like an incontinent dog or gets bogged down in deep mud, sand, and slush, it stays mobile. It is a serious, old-school off-roader modernized and made accessible for the digital age.
Thankfully, the chassis is more than a match for the brute power. The B5 relies on the DiSus-P intelligent hydraulic suspension—an electronically controlled system that adjusts fluid pressure and volume at each corner.
It alters ride height across a generous 140mm adjustment range while dynamically tweaking damping stiffness in milliseconds. The result is a setup that balances extreme off-road capability with plush on-road comfort, keeping the tires firmly planted so all that horsepower isn’t wasted.
When you pump that hydraulic system up to its highest setting, the B5’s off-road geometry metrics become genuinely eye-opening. Maximum ground clearance rises from a respectable standard setup to a towering 310mm. That height gives you a steep 39-degree approach angle and a 35-degree departure angle, ensuring the front and rear bumpers clear aggressive obstacles without scraping.
Meanwhile, the 27-degree break-over angle allows you to crest sharp ridges and steep lahar mounds without stranding the underbody on its frame. And when torrential rains turn roads into rivers, the B5 offers an impressive 790mm flood wading depth—giving you serious peace of mind when confronting standing water.
Step inside, and high-tech convenience meets true luxury. The highlight is a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen running the B5’s infotainment system, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
It’s paired with an 800-watt, 16-speaker audio setup engineered by French specialist Devialet. When you’re actively driving into the teeth of a storm, nothing sets the mood quite like blasting some ominous opera.
Keeping with the digital theme, the driver gets a sharp 12.3-inch instrument display complemented by a 12.3-inch head-up display, ensuring key info stays directly in your line of sight.
The perforated leather seats are supportive and plush, giving you total confidence behind the wheel no matter how nasty conditions get outside. Below, the center console features a wireless charging pad alongside retro-styled toggle switches for the drive modes, hazards, EV/HEV modes, and low-range lock.
Those drive modes deserve a special mention: there are 16 distinct presets fine-tuned by software to tackle almost any scenario. Beyond standard Sport, Normal, Eco, and Intelligent modes, you get dedicated settings for climbing, wading, mud, sand, snow, and grass.
Denza has effectively taken the guesswork out of off-roading, enabling the average driver to push a few buttons and comfortably conquer punishing terrain once reserved solely for seasoned veterans.
There’s even a panoramic glass roof to allow you to soak in more of the elements when you’re in the mood for some (pseudo) al fresco motoring. But today isn’t one of those days.
Out on the open road, all this underlying technology operates with surprising discretion. It doesn’t demand your attention; it simply keeps you moving forward. From pockmarked provincial roads and smooth expressways to lahar beds and muddy trails up north, the B5 nonchalantly presses on—unbothered, unperturbed, and barely breaking a sweat.
The steering is light but offers decent feedback, growing reassuringly precise when things get rough. The brakes are firm and immensely powerful, backed by effective regenerative braking.
As for performance? It’s explosive. Floor the throttle while cruising casually, and all 570 horses hit instantly—especially in Burst Mode when you need to pass a noisy lane-hogger on the highway.
We put all of this to the test on a trip up north to pick up parts and explore the rugged trails surrounding the Sacobia River. What began as an intensely hot morning quickly turned dark, oppressive, and humid, before unleashing a deluge of biblical proportions.
Thankfully, the Denza remained completely unfazed by the flooded challenges in its path.
It wasn’t until Aldous and I stepped out, scrolled through the photos, and took a breath that we realized just how chaotic the day really was—how effortlessly the B5 made it look, and ultimately how lucky we were to get back home unscathed.
