What is luxury?
Luxury means many different things to many different people. But the non-negotiables remain steadfast: space—lots of it—exquisite build quality, prodigious power and absolute exclusivity from the mundane. Above all, true luxury is the quiet, unflinching confidence in knowing that what you command is a cut above the rest.
Where the untrained eye sees what appears to be a spruced up van, you recognize a true masterpiece of modern engineering. Luxury is an experience you soak in, defined by meticulous attention to detail and a serene grace that refuses to bow under duress. IYKYK kind of deal.
The Denza D9 embodies these exacting traits to a T.
First, let’s address the elephant in the room: yes, the Denza D9 shares its underlying lineage as the upscale iteration of the BYD eMax 9. However, substantial engineering, technical specification, and structural upgrades easily warrant its roughly 1.5-million-peso price premium. Cast a glance over its vast silhouette, park it side-by-side with the more common eMax 9 (an excellent vehicle too no doubt) and the sheer scale becomes obvious.
Spanning an impressive 5,250 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width, and standing 1,920 mm tall with a generous 3,110 mm wheelbase, it stretches 111 mm longer, 115 mm taller, and adds 65 mm between the axles over its mass-market kin.
Yet, physical size is only the opening act. Inside lies dual-pane acoustic glass engineered specifically to eliminate ambient road harshness, while beneath its platform is a dual-electric motor setup that endows the D9 with all-wheel-drive grip and a staggering combined output of 400 horsepower and 680 Nm of instantaneous torque.
Despite tipping the scales at a hefty curb weight of roughly 2.6 metric tons, this luxury mover rockets from 0 to 100 km/h in a scant (for a heavy MPV)  7.9 seconds.
Step inside, and the cabin unfolds as an opulent sanctuary. The middle row features dual executive zero-gravity captain’s chairs clad in supple Nappa leather. With the touch of a button on the integrated armrest screens, these seats recline to an effortless 152 degrees while raising power leg rests, creating an ergonomic posture that genuinely feels as weightless as floating in water.
Multi-mode pneumatic massage functions pamper your back, while front occupants enjoy identical massaging treatment to stay relaxed and alert during cross-country treks. But if you’d rather work, have a snack or watch something on your mobile device, there are fold-away tray tables with a slot for your drink and your cellular device for the middle-row occupants.
The rest of the cabin follows suit with tri-zone climate control, an onboard cooling refrigerator, genuine wood trim, suede headliners framing the split panoramic glass roof. The third row is enough for three average-sized adults. Perfect for your team, or your family.
Audio is handled by a superb 14-speaker, 775-watt Dynaudio surround sound system crafted by Danish acoustic engineers. It transforms the interior into a rolling concert hall; truly, the thunderous opening of O Fortuna has never sounded quite so dramatic inside a moving vehicle.
Up front, the driver commands a digital nerve center comprising three distinct displays: a massive 15.6-inch central infotainment display offering a 360-degree HD panoramic camera view with centimeter precision, a 10.25-inch full-LCD instrument cluster, and a crisp 12-inch head-up display projecting critical navigation and other vehicle telemetry directly onto the windshield.
Do these dynamic specs live up to the executive price tag on the open road? Indubitably.
The D9 is a masterclass in linear, silent operation. It glides away from a standstill in default electric mode, maneuvering through tight urban spaces with a surprisingly tight 5.95-meter turning radius. And the bird’s eye-view camera makes easy work parking in tight parking slots.
Even when the front-mounted 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine kicks in to juice the battery, the mechanical transition is so imperceptible that you will neither hear nor feel it amidst midday city traffic.
On the open highway, the D9 truly asserts its dominance. When seasonal monsoon rains leave highway asphalt overlays battered with potholes, expansion joint gaps, and ruts, the Denza glides over them, keeping your Zen-like tranquility unbothered.
Much of this magic carpet ride is credited to the DiSus-C Intelligent Damping Suspension system, which actively samples road inputs milliseconds ahead to dynamically adapt hydraulic damping rates, then further supported by high-profile 235/60R18 all-season touring tires.
These accoutrements invite grand, uninterrupted journeys—think Manila to Naga down south or straight up to the tip of Ilocos up north  on a single fill-up. Powered by advanced Super Hybrid DM-i architecture, the D9 pairs its 53-liter fuel tank with a robust 40 kWh LFP Blade Battery.
The result is an astounding combined cruising range of roughly 980 kilometers, including up to 180 kilometers of pure zero-emission electric driving. When it comes time to top up, the onboard system supports 11 kW AC charging for overnight home replenishment, as well as 80 kW DC fast-charging capable of bringing the battery up to speed in short order.
Safety is equally uncompromising. The D9 is reinforced by a comprehensive safety cage housing up to 9 airbags, ABS-EBD, electronic stability control, and hill-hold assist. Furthermore, a state-of-the-art Level 2 ADAS suite acts as a co-pilot, featuring lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.
The result is a tour de force of automotive engineering. A friend and mentor who rides in a current-generation Toyota Alphard daily was left deeply impressed after a turn in the cabin, explicitly citing the D9’s roomier footprint, superior seating ergonomics, and ultra-quiet ride quality as the new benchmark—high praise from a hardened luxury loyalist.
For decades, drivers have been programmed to associate automotive prestige exclusively with heritage badges and the century-old luxury maisons of Europe. The Denza D9 steps boldly into the spotlight, shattering those legacy notions and demanding to be recognized as a true luxury powerhouse in its own right.
